"Decentralized Governance and Accountability: Academic Research and the Future of Donor Programming" – USAID Publishes Study on Decentralisation

Decentralisation has often been depicted as the prime solution to address both economic inefficiency and bad governance. However, while enthusiasm for decentralisation reform was high during the 1990s, recent voices have focused more on the potentially negative impact of decentralisation programmes on inequality and social cohesion at the local level.
Against this backdrop USAID in cooperation with world-renown academic institutions has conducted a study to review experiences and research findings collected throughout the past decades with the aim of informing future development programming in this area.
