60% of the world’s population lives in cities. As a result, cities have become centers for innovation, employment and economic development. Currently however, they are also at the center of the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to the outbreak cities have been facing severe health, social and economic difficulties. Pre-existing tensions and vulnerabilities of urban communities have been exacerbated. Addressing issues of mobility, urban density, adequate housing and infrastructure has gained in importance.

Inspired by these developments, the Metropolis Network has issued a call to rethink metropolitan spaces. Together with other urban stakeholders, Metropolis hopes to develop new and transformative solutions that will improve urban resilience and make governing structures, services and policies more efficient and citizen responsive. With the aim of creating greener, more inclusive, prosperous, resilient and safe cities this call tries to reframe the COVID-19 crisis as an opportunity for change. Up to date the city of Berlin, the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona, the Gauteng Province, Guangzhou, Montevideo and Montréal have already pledged their support.
