The 64th session of the Commission on the Status of Women will be held in New York from 9th to 20th March 2020 at the United Nations Headquarters. During the session representatives of Member States, UN entities, and ECOSOC-accredited non-governmental organizations (NGOs) from all over the world will evaluate to what extent the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action as well as the outcomes of the 23rd special session of the General Assembly have been implemented. In addition, current challenges inhibiting the realization of the Platform for Action as well as gender equality and female empowerment will be considered and discussed.
The meeting will be facilitated by members of the Bureau of the Commission on the Status of Women from Armenia, Iraq, Australia, Algeria and Trinidad and Tobago.
In preparation for the session states are invited to execute extensive national-level reviews of their advances made and challenges encountered. Moreover, the regional commissions of the UN are encouraged to perform regional reviews and hold regional intergovernmental meetings to provide further input for the 64th session of the Commission. The insights from the Expert Group Meeting Beijing 25+ on current context, emerging issues and prospects for gender equality and women’s rights will serve as a starting point to the discussion.
