To be fit for the future, cities and regions have a crucial role to play in setting ambitious sustainable development policies and rethinking their planning, budgeting and priorities from the ground up. Granular data is key to developing place-based responses to pressing and emerging challenges, because national averages can mask huge territorial disparities.

Are we on track? Where do cities and regions stand with respect to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)?

The OECD’s latest report A Territorial Approach to the SDGs provides cutting-edge evidence on the role of local and regional governments to meet the 2030 Agenda, a unique localised indicator framework and dataset measuring the distance of cities and regions to the SDGs, visualised in an online web tool.

Why use this tool?

i) For 110+ indicators, the tool shows the distance of 600+ regions and 600+ cities to end values for 2030 for the 17 SDGs in OECD member and partner countries.

ii) The tool compares the performance of cities and regions with their national peers, national and OECD averages and inspirational counterparts in other countries.

iii) The tool encourages peer-learning and dialogue across similar regions and cities, increases the accountability of governments in tracking progress and raises awareness across society.
