DeLoG Network Calls for Enhanced Local Government Engagement in UN Processes

DeLoG Network Pushes for Stronger Local Voice in Global Governance

The Development Partners Network on Decentralisation and Local Governance (DeLoG) has released a groundbreaking Joint Statement calling for enhanced engagement of local and regional governments in UN processes. This comes on the heels of a major win in the UN Pact for the Future, which recognized the need for local government involvement in advancing the 2030 Agenda.

DeLoG's statement goes further, advocating for direct representation in UN decision-making and formal recognition as a distinct constituency. With upcoming opportunities at COP29 and the 2025 Financing for Development Conference, DeLoG is poised to drive a new era of local influence on the global stage.

The Development Partners Network on Decentralisation and Local Governance (DeLoG) is proud to announce the release of our Joint Statement on Strengthening Local and Regional Government Engagement in UN Processes. This statement comes at a crucial time, following a significant win for local governments in the recently adopted UN Pact for the Future.

A Step Forward in the Pact for the Future

The Pact for the Future, adopted at the Summit of the Future, includes a groundbreaking provision in Action 55. It requests the UN Secretary-General to "provide recommendations on how engagement with local and regional authorities could advance the 2030 Agenda, particularly the localization of the Sustainable Development Goals, by the end of the seventy-ninth session for Member States' consideration."

This inclusion aligns closely with DeLoG's advocacy efforts and represents a major step towards recognizing the critical role of local governments in achieving global development goals.

Looking Forward: DeLoG's Joint Statement

While celebrating this progress, DeLoG's Joint Statement outlines additional key requests to further strengthen local government engagement:

  1. Direct representation of local and regional governments in UN decision-making processes.
  2. Formal recognition of local and regional governments as a distinct, self-organized constituency within the UN system.
  3. Systematic consultation with local and regional government networks in the preparation and implementation of global agendas.

These requests form the core of DeLoG's ongoing advocacy efforts, aiming to ensure that local voices are heard and considered at the highest levels of global governance.

Upcoming Advocacy Opportunities

DeLoG and its members are committed to advancing these goals at upcoming global events, including:

  • COP29: We will advocate for increased local government involvement in climate action planning and implementation.
  • Financing for Development Conference 2025: DeLoG will push for improved access to finance for local governments to implement sustainable development projects.

These platforms provide crucial opportunities to further the agenda set forth in our Joint Statement and build on the momentum gained from the Pact for the Future.

Call to Action

We call upon the United Nations, member states, and all stakeholders to recognize and act upon the vital role that local and regional governments play in addressing global challenges and implementing international agendas.

DeLoG stands ready to contribute its expertise and network to the development of recommendations for enhancing local government engagement in UN processes. We invite all interested parties to join us in this crucial effort to create more inclusive, effective, and locally-responsive global governance structures.

Together, we can ensure that the voices of local communities are heard and considered in shaping our collective future
